Most information I am finding states that the normal dosage for Pitocin is 10-40u/per 1000ml bag of IV solution. They adjust it according to how much contractions you are having and how your body is responding. It is used on a sliding scale. This is why it is so important that the nurses and doctors check you frequently before adjusting the rate of the IV.I really can't find any information that says what level is too much, just that the average dosage generally ends up at approx. 40U/per 1000ml of IV solution and it is just increased every 15 minutes until your contractions are at a point that they can cause your labor to progress to deliver. Each womans body responds differently. Mine responded both times I had Pitocin in 10-15minutes after first dose given. I know some woman have been on it for up to 12 hours and still no results..so everyone responds different. The way it is set up it is alittle hard to determine what is an overdose because everyone reacts different.
