I was put in the hospital at 32 weeks on bed rest due to preeclampsia. At 36 weeks they did an amnio to check the baby's lungs. That was Oct.9th. On Oct.11th at 8 Am the nurses started the PIT DRIP and the doctor came in and broke my water, I was 1 cm dialated. By 12 noon the doctor came in and said that I was much to happy. The PIT DRIP was at 24 and I was having good contractions but they were not so bad that I couldn't handle them. So the doctor decided to double the dose to 60 to move things along. Well let me tell you that by the time the drip was set at 48 the contractions were unbearable and when the doctor came in at 1 they had to put internal monitors in me to measure the strength of the contractions and monitor the baby's heart rate. I was then dialated to 3cm. Well the order was to have my contractions between 70-80 in strength on the monitor. My contractions were, as my husband tells me were 90-105 most time. I at this point was in so much pain that even though I said we were doing this naturally I was begging for an epidural to numb my stomach. The nurse said she would talk to the doctor and came back in with only a pain shot. This agonizing pain went on until 6pm when my nurse checked me I was only dialated to 4cm. Close to 7 the baby's heart rate disapeared from the monitor. The heart rate did come back but the doctor was called and he had the nurse shut off the PIT DRIP and a C-section was schedualed. I was still in pain but relieved that the contractions weren't as strong. The doctor had chosen for me to have a spinal because it was safer for both me and the baby. It took them 4 tries to get the spinal done. My son was born at 9:49pm and I was scared because at first he wasn't breathing but the nicu nurses gave him some oxygen and we heard that first wonderful little cry. I did have a spinal headache for two and a half days before they fixed it with an epidural blood patch. I am now pregnant with my second baby and I'm a lot smarter and have been reading up on pitocin. I hope to have a whole new experience without the use of pitocin or the use of a spinal.
