On June 6,2000, just three days past my due date, my doctor decided to induce labor & I really never understood why. I always thought it was normal to go as much as two weeks past your due date. I had a totally smooth pregnancy with no complications. When the doctor sent me to be induced, I was not dilated at all & had never had any contractions. I was admitted at about 10:00 a.m. & the pit drip was started. I didn't feel anything for several hours so they upped the drip & still nothing happened. It was getting to be nighttime, so they stopped the drip for the night and decided to try it again in the morning. At 5:00 in the morning, I was awakened and the high dose of pit drip was started again. This time, I began having intense contractions, but not dilating. By 1:00 p.m. I couldn't stand the pain any longer, and I was only dilated 2cm. The dr. told me that labor could drag on for quite awhile longer & recommended a c-section. Also, my son's heart rate was really fluctuating so I agreed to a c-section which was my worst nightmare. After my son was born, he was extremely shaky & quivering. He also had an infection & had to be put on IV drip. Brandon is now 16 months old & has always had developmental delays & I feel it is due to the high levels of pitocin that I was given. I am so grateful for this site & for this information. Now, I don't feel alone.
